No less important than mainstream and mass-distributed films, these films were often made by actual queer filmmakers like Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, Paul Morrissey, and Andy Warhol. These filmmakers also most likely did not regard the censorship boards at the time and therefore had more freedom to explore sexuality, queer identity, and non-traditional plots and structure of their films.
